“Daily topics” broadcast on the nuclear phase-out from the Isar 2 nuclear power plant

On the occasion of Germany’s impending nuclear phase-out, ARD broadcast its “Tagesthemen” program live on Friday evening from the site of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant in Lower Bavaria. In the 45-minute special edition, moderator Ingo Zamperoni reported on his exclusive visit to the facility. The Isar 2 kiln in Essenbach (Landshut district) will go offline on Saturday, as will the Neckarwestheim 2 nuclear power plants in Baden-Württemberg and Emsland in Lower Saxony.

Zamperoni’s interlocutors included Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), who criticized the nuclear phase-out as irresponsible. Instead, he again called for an extension of the nuclear power plant runtimes, starting next winter or after the next federal election. Doing without nuclear energy and relying on coal is a double standard. And: The expansion of renewable energies must be accelerated.
According to Green Party leader Ricarda Lang, phasing out nuclear power also means entering the age of renewable energies. So the pace should be set for solar and wind energy as well as for hydrogen. The fact that more coal is currently being consumed is not due to the nuclear phase-out, but to the effects of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, she said.
The “daily topics” are usually produced in a studio in Hamburg. However, there have been a number of exceptions where the program was moderated in full or in part from abroad. In 2020, for example, there was a “Daily Issues” program from Washington on the occasion of the US elections, and in 2022 there was a live program from Kiev, Ukraine.
