Paris According to a new study by the International Energy Agency IEA, the global energy crisis is leading to a drastic acceleration in the expansion of renewable energies. The total capacity will therefore almost double worldwide in the next five years, replacing coal as the largest source of electricity generation, the IEA announced on Tuesday in Paris. This means that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees remains achievable. The expected growth in renewable energies is 30 percent higher than forecast a year ago.

Concerns about energy security sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have prompted countries to turn to renewable energies such as solar and wind power. This is intended to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, the prices of which have skyrocketed. From 2022 to 2027, the IEA expects global renewable power generation capacity to increase by 2,400 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to China’s total power generation capacity.
